Uninstaller Feedback Survey

    • Ongoing survey - Release - Desktop - All locales

An invitation to participate in the Firefox Desktop Uninstall Survey has been part of the uninstall flow since October 2018. Data older than 6 months is deleted in accordance with our Survey Data Retention Policy. This report shows the results, filtered to only show responses from those who uninstalled Firefox release.

This version of the dashboard shows all locales we deployed this survey in (EN, FR, PT-BR, DE, IT, PL, RU, ES). Please remember that this is not a survey of every user who uninstalled Firefox. Only those users in our top locales, who opted in to giving a response at the time of uninstalling, are included. This means that while we can evaluate this data for trends, it does not necessarily give us an accurate picture of the entire uninstall population. Additionally, these are not all leavers of Firefox-- some people who took this survey will immediately return by reinstalling, and some leavers never bother to uninstall and are therefore not present in this survey.

The number of responses to the survey varies with the number of uninstalls happening. Of particular interest, you can see the impact of the Add-on certificate issue the week of 4/29 and following. On a typical day, 700 to 1,000 uninstalling users agree to take this survey.

Firefox has been uninstalled, but we'd love to hear why you left!

Please take this short survey.  It will help make Firefox better for others.
    • Reasons for Uninstalling Firefox

There is some amount of day-to-day variation in the reasons users uninstall, but the mix of reasons remains roughly constant across time, returning in as little as one week to previous levels after a disturbance such as the add-on certificate issue. There has been a slight upward trend in the percent of users who uninstall because they prefer another browser since October 2018.

    • We can see levels more easily after smoothing by aggregating within weeks. Note that the most common reason as of July 2019 is something other than reinstall and other than preferring another browser.

    • If we look at the number of people who gave each reason for uninstalling rather than the percent, we can learn more about the slight upward trend in the percent of people who uninstall because they prefer another browser. This does not represent an increase in the number who prefer another browser! Rather it's due to a decline in the other two reasons over the time the survey has been active.

    • Reinstallers

When users reported they were uninstalling in order to reinstall Firefox, we asked them why. This graph shows responses aggregated by week. As of July 2019, fixing an issue is the most common reason to reinstall, folliowed by resetting to defaults.

Note: we added "to change the language that Firefox uses" the week of 7/8/19, so please do not directly compare answers from before that week to after. Other answers likely declined in frequency due to a new answer being made available.

    • Uninstallers who prefer another browser

If a user responded that they are uninstalling Firefox because they prefer another browser, we asked them which browser they preferred and why.

Chrome is the most popular preferred browser. This does not appear to change over time. This graph shows responses aggregated by week.
